Author Introduction

Bui Thac Chuyen is widely recognized as one of the most distinctive and accomplished contemporary Vietnamese filmmakers. Graduated from the Faculty of Acting at Hanoi Academy of Theater and Cinema, his first film as a director -  short film Cuoc Xe Dem (2000) is the first Vietnamese film to be introduced at Cannes. His first feature film - Living in fear (2006) won the Best Film Award at the Shanghai International Film Festival and the Grand Jury Award at the Asia Pacific Film Festival. Adrift (2009) won the Fipresci Award at the Venice Film Festival. Glorious Ashes (2022) is the first Vietnamese film in competition at the Tokyo International Film Festival. Glorious Ashes won Best Film at the Nantes Three Continent Film Festival. His latest film, Tunnel: Sun in the Dark, is the highest‑grossing war movie in Vietnamese cinema history.

Though selective in his output, each of his films has garnered critical praise and made a significant impact both in Vietnam and internationally. He is a four-time recipient of the Best Director award, including at the 2005 and 2023 Golden Kite Awards, as well as at the 16th and 23rd Vietnam Film Festivals.
