Mr. Jang Joon Hwan is a renowned South Korean film director and screenwriter, known for his distinctive cinematic vision and socially conscious storytelling. He holds a degree in English Literature from Sungkyunkwan University and is a graduate of the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA).
He gained international acclaim with his debut feature Save the Green Planet! (2003), which was screened at numerous prestigious film festivals and garnered several major awards, including Best New Director at the Daejong Film Awards, Best New Director at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, Best Film at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN), and the Golden Raven Award at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival.
Jang further cemented his reputation with Hwayi: A Monster Boy (2013) and achieved major commercial and critical success with 1987: When the Day Comes (2017), which drew over 7 million admissions. His work is celebrated for its bold narratives and profound exploration of political and societal issues.
He is married to acclaimed actress and director Moon So-ri, known for her performances in Oasis (2002), The Queenmaker (2023), and most recently, the hit drama When Life Gives You Tangerines (2025).
